Barev Centre Joins Scarborough Food Security Forum Hosted by MP Michael Coteau
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, Barev Centre took part in the Scarborough Food Security Forum, a community gathering hosted by Michael Coteau, Member of Parliament for Scarborough–Woburn, at Global Kingdom Ministries on Markham Road.
Barev Centre was represented by Maro Kochinyan, who joined approximately 100 participants — including leaders from food banks, healthcare, schools, faith communities, businesses, non-profit organizations, and the agricultural sector — to discuss the growing reality of food insecurity in Scarborough and to explore practical, community-based solutions.
A shared conversation on food insecurity in Scarborough
The forum featured a panel discussion with experts and community leaders, followed by facilitated discussion groups where participating organizations shared their experiences and recommendations. Conversations focused on improving food accessibility and affordability across Scarborough's diverse neighbourhoods.
Barev Centre was proud to share its vision: that dignified access to nourishing food is not only a basic need but a matter of community, identity, and belonging. As a Canadian-Armenian community services centre, Barev Centre sees food security as closely tied to its mission of helping families connect, grow, and thrive.
New areas for cooperation
Through the forum's discussions, Barev Centre identified several promising areas for collaboration, including youth job training and volunteer opportunities, community gardens, and better connections between Canadian-Armenian families and local food resources.
We were glad to take part alongside our neighbours at Holy Trinity Armenian Church — represented by Ter Zareh and Deacon Sarven Bicakci — and partner organizations including Daily Bread Food Bank, the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, and Malvern Family Resource Centre.
Carrying the conversation forward
The feedback gathered through the forum will be shared with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Prime Minister as part of broader conversations surrounding Canada's national food strategy. Barev Centre is proud that the voice and frontline experience of our community contributed to this important dialogue.
